Main 26 saal ka tha jab meri zindagi ka pehla SIP start hua. ₹2,500 per month. Ek Flexi Cap fund. Sticky note pe likha tha — "Future Sushant ka thank-you note."
Do mahine baad, market 8% gira. Main roz Zerodha Coin kholta, red numbers dekhta, aur sochta — yaar, FD hi theek tha. Kam se kam paisa safe toh hai.
Uss waqt mujhe ek cheez samajh nahi aayi thi, jo aaj 6 saal baad clear hai: investing ka game returns ka nahi hai. Time ka hai. Aur sabse zyada — apne aap pe bharosa rakhne ka hai.
Woh Ek Conversation Jo Sab Kuch Badal Gaya
Meri mummy ki ek cousin hain — Sunita aunty. Government school teacher, Prayagraj me rehti hain. Na koi MBA, na koi finance background. Par jab 2024 me unki retirement hui, toh unke paas ₹1.8 crore ka corpus tha.
Maine poocha, "Aunty, aisa kaise?"
Unka jawab itna simple tha ki lagbhag funny tha: "Beta, 1998 me jab tumhare uncle ki naukari lagi thi, humne decide kiya — har salary ka 20% LIC aur mutual funds me dalenge. Bas. 26 saal yahi kiya. Beech me kabhi band nahi kiya. Market crash hua toh bhi nahi. Uncle ko heart attack aaya 2011 me, tab bhi nahi."
Main kuch der chup raha.
Phir poocha, "Kabhi mann nahi kiya ki stop kar do? Ya kisi hot stock me sab daal do?"
Unhone haske kaha, "Mann toh bahut baar kiya. Par humne rule banaya tha — mann ki nahi sunni. System ki sunni. Auto-debit tha. Mann ka kya hai, roz badalta hai."
Yahi hai woh baat jo koi bhi YouTube finfluencer aapko nahi batayega. Kyunki ye bikti nahi hai. "Boring consistency" ka koi viral short nahi banta. Par yahi banati hai crore.
Morgan Housel Ki Ek Baat Jo Dimag Me Atki Hai
The Psychology of Money me ek important idea hai — paisa achha sambhalna aapki smartness pe utna nahi depend karta jitna aapke behaviour pe.
Pehle padha toh cliché laga. Phir book me ek story mili — ek petrol pump attendant aur janitor jo mara toh karodo chhod gaya. Kaise? Blue-chip stocks. 60+ saal. Kabhi bech nahi.
Usi book me ek doosra example hai — ek bada corporate executive, Harvard MBA, 40s me retire ho gaya. 2008 me bankrupt.
Dono ke beech IQ ka farak nahi tha. Behaviour ka tha.
Aur yahi baat Sunita aunty me bhi thi. Unka CAGR koi 35% nahi tha. Shayad 12–13% average raha hoga over 26 years. Par discipline 100% tha.
Calculation simple hai — agar aap 25 saal tak har mahine ₹15,000 SIP karte ho 12% return pe, toh maturity pe aapke paas approximately ₹2.8 crore hote hain. Usi SIP ko agar 15 saal kiya, toh sirf ₹75 lakh. 10 extra saal = 3.7x zyada paisa.
Compounding ki asli magic last decade me hoti hai. Isliye jaldi shuru karna > zyada paisa daalna.
Mera Apna Ek Galat Decision
2021 me crypto bull run peak pe tha. Main Noida me naya flat shift hua tha.
Maine apni SIP ka ek chunk redeem kiya. ₹80,000 Solana me daal diya.
Aap guess kar sakte ho kya hua. 2022 aaya, crypto winter aaya, Solana apne peak se 90% gir gaya. Mera ₹80,000 ka portfolio bachke ₹11,000 ho gaya.
Lesson jo seekha woh ye nahi tha ki "crypto bad hai." Lesson ye tha ki — main apni already-working strategy chhod ke ek aisi cheez me gaya jo mere circle of competence me nahi thi. Kyunki FOMO tha.
Warren Buffett ka ek famous principle hai — stock market ek aisi jagah hai jahan paisa impatient logon se patient logon ke paas transfer hota hai.
2021 me main impatient tha. 2022 me main wrong side pe tha.
Radhika Gupta Ki Ek Advice Jo Har Indian Ko Sunni Chahiye
Ye line Indian context me extra important hai. Humein har jagah se product bechne wale log milte hain. LIC agent uncle. Bank RM jo ULIP becheta hai. Cousin jo crypto group chalata hai. WhatsApp pe "multibagger tips" bhejne wala banda.
Sab ke paas product hai. Goal kisi ke paas nahi hai — kyunki goal aapka hai.
Main jab apne goals likhne baitha pehli baar, toh realize hua — main retirement ke liye invest nahi kar raha tha. Main "logon ko impress karne" ke liye kar raha tha. Ye do bilkul alag cheezein hain. Pehli wali me patience chahiye. Doosri me hype chahiye.
Jab humne goal clear kiya — "45 ki age tak ₹3 crore, taki optional ho jaye kaam karna" — tab investing suddenly boring aur satisfying dono ho gayi. 2 mahine ki red candle meri chinta nahi thi.
Naval Ki Ek Baat Jo Poora Philosophy Hai
Naval Ravikant aksar kehte hain — long-term games long-term logon ke saath khelo.
Ye sirf business ke liye nahi hai. Investing ke liye bhi hai. Apni shaadi ke liye bhi hai. Apne co-founders ke liye bhi hai.
Long-term game me kya hota hai? Compounding. Sirf paisa nahi — trust bhi, skills bhi, health bhi, relationships bhi.
Main ab apne investments ko "portfolio" ke jaisa nahi dekhta. Main inhe apna 45-saal-ke-Sushant-ka-letter samajhta hoon. Har SIP transaction ek sentence hai us letter ka. Kuch sentences ruk jaayen toh paragraph tut jata hai.
3 Rules Jo Main Apne Chhote Bhai Ko Diye
Mera chhota bhai Harsh 23 ka hai. Apni pehli job lagi Bangalore me. Usne mujhe poocha — "Bhai, kya karu paison ka?"
Maine usse teen rules diye. Yahi teen main aap ke saath share karta hoon:
Rule 1: Pehle emergency fund, phir investment
6 mahine ka expense FD ya liquid fund me. Bina iske SIP start mat karo. Kyunki jab emergency aayegi, toh aap SIP redeem karoge — aur woh bhi market bottom pe. Ye sabse costly mistake hai.
Rule 2: 50-20-30 ka Indian version
50% needs (rent, food, bills), 20% wants (Zomato, OTT, shopping), 30% future-self (SIP + emergency + skill-building). Americans ki 20% wali advice India me kaam nahi karti. Humari inflation zyada hai, humari safety net kam hai, humare parents ki retirement ki responsibility bhi humari hai.
Rule 3: Index + Flexi Cap + PPF. Done.
23 saal ki umar me smart banne ki zarurat nahi. Ek Nifty 50 Index Fund, ek Flexi Cap, aur PPF. Bas. Total 3 products. 20 saal ke liye hi nahi — shayad 30 saal ke liye. Jab 35 ka hoga tab portfolio diversify kar lena.
Usne haske kaha, "Itna simple?"
Maine kaha, "Bhai, simple isliye kaam karta hai kyunki follow kar sakte ho. Complex strategies fail isliye hoti hain kyunki 3 mahine me chhod di jaati hain."
Last Thought
Sab kuch time leta hai. Ped lagane se fal aane tak time lagta hai. Gym join karne se body ban'ne tak time lagta hai. Aur ₹2,500 ka SIP ₹1 crore banne tak time lagta hai.
Hum shortcut dhundte hain kyunki humein tension hai ki "late ho jayenge." Par ironic baat ye hai — shortcut dhundne me hi late hote hain. Jo banda 23 ki age me boring ₹5,000 ka SIP shuru kar deta hai, woh 43 me woh position pe hota hai jahan 33 wala jaldi-jaldi paise banana chahta hai.
Mere liye biggest realization ye hai: paisa banana ek skill nahi hai. Wait karna ek skill hai. Aur ye skill aaj ke Instagram-Reels-wale zamane me sabse rare hai. Isliye sabse valuable bhi hai.
Sunita aunty ka ek last dialogue tha us din: "Beta, paisa uske paas jata hai jo uska peecha nahi karta."
Main ab uss line ko apne phone ke lock screen pe rakhta hoon.
Note: Ye personal experience aur general principles pe based hai. Koi bhi investment decision lene se pehle SEBI-registered financial advisor se baat kar lena. Market risks apply karte hain — past returns future ki guarantee nahi hain.
I was 26 when the first SIP of my life started. ₹2,500 per month. One Flexi Cap fund. On a sticky note I'd written — "Future Sushant's thank-you note."
Two months later, the market fell 8%. Every day I'd open Zerodha Coin, see the red numbers, and think — man, an FD was better. At least the money would be safe.
There was one thing I didn't understand back then that is crystal clear 6 years later today: the game of investing isn't about returns. It's about time. And most of all — it's about trusting yourself.
The One Conversation That Changed Everything
My mom has a cousin — Sunita aunty. A government school teacher who lives in Prayagraj. No MBA, no finance background. But when she retired in 2024, she had a corpus of ₹1.8 crore.
I asked, "Aunty, how did this happen?"
Her answer was so simple it was almost funny: "Beta, in 1998 when your uncle got his job, we decided — we'll put 20% of every salary into LIC and mutual funds. That's it. We did exactly this for 26 years. Never stopped in between. Not even when the market crashed. Not even when your uncle had a heart attack in 2011."
I stayed quiet for a while.
Then I asked, "Did you never feel like stopping? Or putting it all into some hot stock?"
She laughed and said, "I felt like it many times. But we'd made a rule — don't listen to the heart. Listen to the system. There was an auto-debit. The heart? It changes every day."
This is the thing no YouTube finfluencer will ever tell you. Because it doesn't sell. No viral short gets made about "boring consistency." But that's exactly what builds a crore.
One Line From Morgan Housel That's Stuck in My Head
The Psychology of Money has an important idea — handling money well depends much less on how smart you are and much more on how you behave.
When I first read it, it felt like a cliché. Then I found a story in the book — a petrol pump attendant and a janitor who left behind crores when they died. How? Blue-chip stocks. 60+ years. Never sold.
The same book has another example — a big corporate executive, a Harvard MBA, who retired in his 40s. Bankrupt in 2008.
There was no difference in IQ between the two. The difference was behaviour.
And Sunita aunty had this very thing. Her CAGR wasn't some 35%. It was probably around a 12–13% average over 26 years. But her discipline was 100%.
The math is simple — if you do a ₹15,000 SIP every month for 25 years at a 12% return, at maturity you'll have approximately ₹2.8 crore. Do that same SIP for 15 years, and it's only ₹75 lakh. 10 extra years = 3.7x more money.
The real magic of compounding happens in the last decade. That's why starting early > investing more.
One Wrong Decision of My Own
In 2021 the crypto bull run was at its peak. I had just shifted into a new flat in Noida. A friend from the office told me — "Buy Solana, it'll 2x."
I redeemed a chunk of my SIP. Put ₹80,000 into Solana.
You can guess what happened. 2022 came, the crypto winter came, and Solana fell 90% from its peak. My ₹80,000 portfolio shrank to ₹11,000.
The lesson I learned wasn't that "crypto is bad." The lesson was — I abandoned my already-working strategy and went into something that wasn't in my circle of competence. Because of FOMO.
Warren Buffett has a famous principle — the stock market is a place where money is transferred from the impatient to the patient.
In 2021 I was impatient. In 2022 I was on the wrong side.
One Piece of Advice From Radhika Gupta Every Indian Should Hear
Radhika Gupta, the CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund, said in an interview — don't fall in love with products, fall in love with your goals.
This line is extra important in the Indian context. We run into people selling products everywhere. The LIC agent uncle. The bank RM selling ULIPs. The cousin running a crypto group. The guy sending "multibagger tips" on WhatsApp.
Everyone has a product. Nobody has your goal — because the goal is yours.
When I first sat down to write my goals, I realized — I wasn't investing for retirement. I was doing it to "impress people." These are two completely different things. The first needs patience. The second needs hype.
When we got the goal clear — "₹3 crore by age 45, so that working becomes optional" — investing suddenly became both boring and satisfying. Because now the market's daily moves weren't shaking my mood. I was on a 20-year plan. A 2-month red candle wasn't my worry.
One Line From Naval That's an Entire Philosophy
Naval Ravikant often says — play long-term games with long-term people.
This isn't just for business. It's for investing too. For your marriage too. For your co-founders too.
What happens in a long-term game? Compounding. Not just money — trust too, skills too, health too, relationships too.
I no longer look at my investments like a "portfolio." I think of them as my letter to 45-year-old Sushant. Every SIP transaction is a sentence in that letter. If a few sentences stop, the paragraph breaks.
3 Rules I Gave My Younger Brother
My younger brother Harsh is 23. He got his first job in Bangalore. He asked me — "Bhai, what should I do with my money?"
I gave him three rules. These same three I share with you:
Rule 1: Emergency fund first, then investment
6 months of expenses in an FD or liquid fund. Don't start a SIP without it. Because when an emergency comes, you'll redeem your SIP — and that too at the market bottom. This is the costliest mistake.
Rule 2: The Indian version of 50-20-30
50% needs (rent, food, bills), 20% wants (Zomato, OTT, shopping), 30% future-self (SIP + emergency + skill-building). The American 20% advice doesn't work in India. Our inflation is higher, our safety net is thinner, and our parents' retirement is also our responsibility.
Rule 3: Index + Flexi Cap + PPF. Done.
No need to get smart at age 23. One Nifty 50 Index Fund, one Flexi Cap, and PPF. That's it. Total 3 products. Not just for 20 years — maybe for 30. Diversify the portfolio when you're 35.
He laughed and said, "This simple?"
I said, "Bhai, it's simple precisely because it's simple to follow. Complex strategies fail because they get dropped within 3 months."
Last Thought
Everything takes time. From planting a tree to getting fruit takes time. From joining a gym to building a body takes time. And a ₹2,500 SIP becoming ₹1 crore takes time.
We hunt for shortcuts because we're tense that we'll "be late." But the ironic thing is — it's in hunting for shortcuts that we get late. The guy who starts a boring ₹5,000 SIP at age 23 is, at 43, in the position the 33-year-old is scrambling to reach quickly.
For me the biggest realization is this: making money isn't a skill. Waiting is a skill. And this skill is the rarest in today's Instagram-Reels era. That's why it's also the most valuable.
Sunita aunty had one last line that day: "Beta, money goes to the one who doesn't chase it."
I now keep that line on my phone's lock screen.
Note: This is based on personal experience and general principles. Talk to a SEBI-registered financial advisor before making any investment decision. Market risks apply — past returns are not a guarantee of the future.
₹2,500 per month.
Time का है।
Morgan Housel
The Psychology of Money
Blue-chip stocks.
