If you're a salaried employee in India claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA), you need rent receipts as proof. This guide covers everything — format, rules, and how to generate them for free.

What is HRA?

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a component of salary provided by employers to help employees meet rental expenses. Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, you can claim a partial or full exemption on HRA if you live in a rented house.

When Do You Need Rent Receipts?

  • When your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 (₹1 lakh)
  • When submitting proof for HRA exemption to your employer
  • When filing income tax returns and claiming HRA
  • When the IT department asks for proof during assessment

Key Rule

If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must provide the landlord's PAN number along with rent receipts.

What Must a Rent Receipt Include?

  1. Tenant's name — Your full name as per PAN
  2. Landlord's name — Full name of the property owner
  3. Rental address — Complete address of the rented property
  4. Rent amount — Monthly rent paid (in figures and words)
  5. Period — Month/period for which rent is paid
  6. Date of payment
  7. Landlord's signature
  8. Revenue stamp — Required for cash payments above ₹5,000
  9. Landlord's PAN — Required if annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000

Revenue Stamp — When is it Needed?

Payment MethodRevenue Stamp
Cash payment above ₹5,000Required (₹1 stamp)
Cash payment below ₹5,000Not required
Bank transfer / UPI / chequeNot required

HRA Exemption Calculation

The HRA exemption is the minimum of these three amounts:

  1. Actual HRA received from employer
  2. 50% of basic salary (for metros) or 40% (for non-metros)
  3. Actual rent paid minus 10% of basic salary

Example

Rahul lives in Bengaluru (metro). His monthly details:

  • Basic salary: ₹50,000
  • HRA received: ₹20,000
  • Rent paid: ₹18,000

Calculation:

  1. Actual HRA: ₹20,000
  2. 50% of basic: ₹25,000
  3. Rent - 10% of basic: ₹18,000 - ₹5,000 = ₹13,000

Exempt HRA = ₹13,000 (the minimum of the three)

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not getting receipts every month (generating them all at year-end looks suspicious)
  • Missing landlord's PAN for rent above ₹1 lakh/year
  • Not matching receipt dates with bank transfer dates
  • Using incorrect address (must match actual rented property)
  • Claiming HRA when living in own house
