Resume Format for Freshers — What Actually Gets Interviews

You have no work experience, recruiters spend six seconds per resume, and ATS software filters half of all applications before a human sees them. This guide gives you the exact format that survives all three — and a free builder that applies it automatically.

The correct section order for freshers

  1. Contact details — name, phone, professional email, city, LinkedIn/GitHub
  2. Career objective — 2–3 lines, specific to the role (not "seeking a challenging position")
  3. Education — degree, college, year, CGPA (if ≥7) — most recent first
  4. Projects & internships — your substitute for work experience; 2–4 entries with outcome bullets
  5. Skills — 6–10 concrete, role-matched skills
  6. Certifications & achievements — courses, hackathons, rankings, scholarships

Experienced professionals put work history on top; freshers flip the order — education and projects lead because that's where your evidence lives.

The five rules that matter

1. One page. Always.

A fresher resume that runs two pages signals padding. Cut hobbies, declarations ("I hereby declare…"), and date-of-birth — Indian recruiters confirm none of these influence shortlisting.

2. Single-column, standard fonts

Fancy two-column graphics break ATS parsing. A clean single-column layout in a standard font parses perfectly and reads fastest. Every template in our free resume maker is pre-tested for ATS.

3. Project bullets = action + tool + result

Weak: "Worked on a website project." Strong: "Built a college-fest registration site in React + Firebase used by 1,200 students." Numbers make six-second scanners stop.

4. Mirror the job description

If the JD says "SQL" and your resume says "databases", the ATS scores you lower. Paste the JD into our JD-match tool and it lists exactly which keywords you're missing.

5. PDF, named properly

Export as PDF (formatting survives every device) and name it FirstName-LastName-Role.pdf — recruiters search downloads folders by filename.

💡 No projects yet? Spend one weekend building one: a expense tracker, a college notes portal, a small analysis of public data. One finished project with a GitHub link beats five "familiar with" skills.
⚠️ Avoid: photos (IT/corporate roles), "objective" paragraphs longer than 3 lines, skill bars/ratings graphics, more than one font, and listing every college subject as a "skill".

Frequently asked questions

What is the best resume format for freshers?

One page, single-column, reverse-chronological: contact → objective → education → projects/internships → skills → certifications. Fast to scan, perfect for ATS.

Should I add a photo?

Not for IT/engineering/corporate roles in India. Only add one where appearance is genuinely job-relevant (aviation, hospitality).

What if my CGPA is low?

Below 7? Omit it and let projects carry the resume. Never lie — offers get revoked at document verification.

Which template should I pick?

Modern or Minimal (single-column) for most roles. Preview your details in all 30+ designs free and pick what reads cleanest.
